If you’ve never experienced fall camping on the Kern River, you’re in for a treat!
As summer winds down, the Kern River Valley begins to slow into a different rhythm.
The days are comfortable, the evenings bring cool mountain air, the summer crowds start to disappear, and the trees around the Kern River Valley and Sequoia National Forest begin showing off their fall colors.
For campers, it’s one of our favorite times of year to be outside.
Whether you’re planning a weekend of hiking and mountain biking, looking for a peaceful riverside getaway, chasing fall colors, or simply want to spend a few nights around a campfire, fall camping in Kernville, California offers a little bit of everything.
Here’s what you can expect when you visit the Kern River Valley in the fall.
🍁 Comfortable Days and Crisp Nights
One of the biggest reasons we love fall camping on the Kern River is the weather.
The heat of summer begins to fade, making it much more comfortable to spend the day outside. Fall is a great time to lace up your hiking boots, hop on your mountain bike, explore the surrounding mountains, or take a scenic drive through the Sequoia National Forest.
Then, as the sun goes down, the temperature drops and the campground changes completely.
Think warm drinks, cozy layers and hoodies, dinner around the campfire, s'mores, and a sky full of stars.
If you're tent camping, be prepared for cooler nights and changing mountain weather. Bring warm sleeping bags, extra blankets, and clothing that you can add or remove throughout the day.
RV and trailer campers can enjoy the cooler evenings from the comfort of their campsite, with hookups available at select sites.
Don’t have your own RV or trailer? Rent one from locally owned RV/trailer rental companies. They even set it up for you and take it down when the fun is over, no hassle or hauling needed! Click the link here to find more information on trailer rentals.

🌲 Fewer Crowds and More Room to Breathe
One of the best parts of fall camping in Kernville is the slower pace.
The busy summer season begins to wind down, and the Kern River Valley feels a little more peaceful. Trails can be quieter, river spots can feel less crowded, and there is more time to simply enjoy where you are.
It's the perfect season for slowing down.
You might spend the morning exploring, the afternoon sitting beside the river, and the evening doing absolutely nothing except watching the fire.
And honestly, that's a pretty good itinerary.

If you love being outside, fall is a fantastic time to explore the Kern River Valley and Sequoia National Forest.
Hiking
Cooler temperatures make fall an excellent season for hiking around Kernville.
Explore riverside trails, mountain paths, waterfalls, and the surrounding forest. Head higher into the mountains to look for fall foliage, or take a scenic drive toward Ponderosa for beautiful autumn scenery.
The Trail of 100 Giants is another unforgettable fall destination, where you can walk among towering giant sequoias while enjoying the changing landscape of the Southern Sierra.
Before heading out, check current trail, road, weather, and fire conditions, especially when traveling into higher elevations.
Mountain Biking
Kernville is an underrated mountain biking destination, and fall is one of our favorite times to ride!
Cooler temperatures make longer rides more enjoyable, while the changing scenery adds another layer to the experience.
From easier local routes to challenging mountain terrain, there are trails in just about every direction.
Spend the day on two wheels, then come back to camp, rinse off the trail dust, make dinner, and settle in beside the fire.
🌊 Enjoy the Kern River
The river is always part of the Kernville experience.
In the fall, you may find yourself spending more time simply enjoying the scenery, walking along the shoreline, fishing, taking photographs, or sitting somewhere quiet and listening to the water.
Remember that the Kern River is a natural waterway. Conditions can change, currents can be strong, and cold water can be dangerous. Always use good judgment around the river, supervise children closely, and use appropriate safety equipment.
🍂 Chase the Fall Colors
Fall color in the Kern River Valley doesn't happen all at once.
Different elevations and areas can change at different times, which makes exploring the surrounding mountains part of the fun.
Keep an eye out for golden aspens, cottonwoods, and other changing trees as you travel through the Kern River Valley and toward higher elevations.
Bring your camera, but don't forget to look up from the screen every once in a while.
Sometimes the best view is the one you weren't planning to find.
🦌 Keep an Eye Out for Wildlife
Fall is also a beautiful time to slow down and notice the wildlife around you.
You may see birds, deer, squirrels, lizards, tarantulas and other animals that call the Kern River Valley and surrounding forest home.
Remember that we are visitors in their habitat.
Give wildlife plenty of space, never feed animals, and keep food and trash secured at your campsite. The best wildlife encounter is one where you can quietly watch an animal go about its day without disturbing it.
🔥 Campfire Season Has Arrived
There is something about a fall campfire that feels just right.
After a day of hiking, biking, exploring Kernville, or driving through the mountains, come back to your campsite, make dinner, and settle into a chair beside the fire.
Add a sweatshirt, a warm drink, and maybe a few s'mores, and you've got the perfect fall camping evening.
Always check current fire restrictions and campground rules before having a campfire, and make sure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving it unattended.

🌱 Leave No Trace: Pack It In, Pack It Out
The beauty of fall in the Kern River Valley is something we all get to enjoy, and
protecting it is a shared responsibility.
When you're camping, hiking, biking, fishing, or exploring the Sequoia National Forest, please practice Leave No Trace.
Whatever you bring with you should leave with you.
That includes food wrappers, bottle caps, tissues, drink containers, fishing line, small pieces of plastic, and all those tiny bits of trash that are easy to overlook.
Micro-trash may be small, but it can have a big impact on the places we love.
If you see something that isn't yours, consider picking it up and packing it out too.
Please stay on designated trails when possible, respect wildlife, follow fire regulations, keep food secured, and leave natural objects where you find them.
Leave nature better than you found it.
