🎃 Halloween at the Edge is coming to Kern River’s Edge Campground Retreat! 👻

There’s something a little different about celebrating Halloween in the mountains.

Picture crisp autumn mornings by the river, coffee in hand, golden leaves overhead, and a whole day of mountain adventures ahead. As evening rolls in, trade your hiking boots for a Halloween costume, carve some pumpkins and finish the night with campfire stories, s’mores (or candy), and a sky full of stars.

That’s Halloween on the Kern River.

This year, we’re dreaming up Halloween at the Edge, a family-friendly weekend at Kern River’s Edge Campground filled with camping, costumes, pumpkins, campfires, and plenty of time to explore the Kern River Valley.

We’re planning fun activities like a Pumpkin Carving Contest and Costume Contest, with plenty of room for families to create their own Halloween traditions at camp.

And the fun doesn’t stop at the campground. Halloween weekend is a great time to explore Kernville and the surrounding Kern River Valley.

Halloween at the Edge 🎃👻🍬

What’s Halloween without a little friendly competition?

We’re planning to bring some Halloween fun to camp with activities designed for campers of all ages.

🎃 Pumpkin Carving Contest

Reserve two consecutive nights during Halloween weekend and get a free pumpkin to carve! We provide the tools and the location, so all you need is your imagination!

Whether you create a classic jack-o’-lantern, a spooky masterpiece, or something completely unexpected, we’ll have a little friendly competition to see which pumpkin takes home the bragging rights.

And if pumpkin carving isn’t your thing, that’s okay. You can always decorate your pumpkin instead. Pack whatever you need to create the perfect pumpkin!

The winner of the pumpkin carving contest with receive a KRE prize!!

👻 Costume Contest

Ghosts, witches, superheroes, monsters, princesses, or something completely your own. Bring your best costume and join the Halloween fun!

Kids, parents and grandparents are all invited to join in on the fun. We’ll have a prize for our favorite look!

The goal isn’t perfection. Homemade, creative, silly, spooky, and wonderfully ridiculous are all welcome!

🔥 Campfires & Halloween Nights

Halloween and campfires were practically made for each other.

After the sun goes down, gather around your campsite fire, make some s’mores, tell a few spooky stories, and listen to the sounds of the river and the nighttime forest.

At Kern River’s Edge, our private campground allows campers to safely enjoy a campfire in their designated firepit. That means a Halloween camping trip can still have one of the best parts of camping: sitting around the fire long after dinner is finished.

🧙‍♀️ Paddle the Lake in Costume with Riverstone Wellness

Looking for something a little more adventurous?

Riverstone Wellness is bringing some Halloween spirit to the water with its annual Witches and Warlock Paddle, happening Saturday, October 31 @ 9:00 am - launching at the French Gulch Recreation Boat Launch.

Grab your paddleboard or kayak, put on your best witch or warlock costume, and head out onto the lake for a Halloween morning on the water.

It’s a pretty memorable way to start Halloween.

And it’s exactly the kind of experience that makes a Kern River Valley Halloween different from celebrating in the city. You can spend the morning outside, surrounded by mountains and water, then head back toward Kernville for lunch, exploring, and an

evening of costumes and candy.

Be sure to check with Riverstone Wellness for current event details and registration information before heading out.

🍬 Trick-or-Treating in Kernville

Then comes the main event for little ghosts and goblins.

Trick-or-treating on Sirretta Street in Kernville is a local Halloween tradition, bringing families together for an evening of costumes, decorations, candy, and community fun.

There’s something wonderfully old-fashioned about trick-or-treating in a small mountain town.

You’re not navigating endless city blocks or rushing from one activity to the next. You can slow down, walk around, say hello to neighbors, admire the decorations, and let the kids enjoy being kids.

For families camping at Kern River’s Edge, it can be the perfect Halloween evening: get cleaned up after a day outside, put on those costumes, head into town for trick-or-treating, and then return to camp for a warm fire under the stars.

🏕️ Make Halloween Weekend a Camping Trip

One of the best parts about spending Halloween in Kernville is that you don't have to spend the entire weekend doing Halloween activities.

Halloween weekend in the Kern River Valley is an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the outdoors.

Spend Saturday morning with a cup of coffee beside the river. Take a hike. Ride your mountain bike. Paddle Lake Isabella. Wander through town. Find a good lunch at a local restaurant or cafe.

Paddle on the lake. Then come back to camp and relax.

🌲 Explore the Trails

Fall is one of our favorite times to explore the mountains around Kernville.

Cooler temperatures make hiking and mountain biking especially enjoyable, and the surrounding Sequoia National Forest offers miles of trails and mountain roads to explore.

For an easy way to get outside near town, check out the Whiskey Flat Trail, which follows the Kern River corridor and offers opportunities for hiking, running, biking, and simply enjoying the scenery.

If you're looking for a bigger adventure, the Kernville area is also a favorite basecamp for mountain bikers exploring trails such as Just Outstanding, Whiskey Flat, and the famous Cannell Plunge.

Whether you're chasing a serious ride or just looking for a peaceful walk beside the river, fall is a beautiful time to get outside.

🚣 Explore Lake Isabella

Halloween weekend doesn't have to be all pumpkins and candy.

Lake Isabella is right down the road from Kernville and offers another way to experience the Kern River Valley.

Depending on conditions and your experience level, you can spend part of the day paddling, fishing, exploring the shoreline, or simply finding a quiet place to enjoy the mountain scenery.

And if you happen to see a group of witches and warlocks paddling across the lake, you'll know you've arrived at Halloween in the Kern River Valley. 🧙‍♀️🎃

🍂 Take a Fall Drive

Sometimes the best adventure is simply getting in the car and seeing where the road takes you.

The roads around Kernville and the Kern River Valley wind through mountains, forests, open landscapes, and small communities. Fall brings cooler temperatures and changing colors at higher elevations, making it a beautiful time for a scenic drive.

Pack a thermos, bring your camera, and leave yourself enough time to stop along the way.

You don't need every minute of your weekend planned.

🌙 Don't Forget to Look Up

One of our favorite things about camping in the Kern River Valley is what happens after dark.

Away from the bright lights of the city, the night sky becomes part of the experience.

After trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, and campfire stories are finished, take a few minutes to turn off the lights, step away from the fire, and look up.

Halloween has plenty of spooky decorations.

Nature has the real special effects.

♻️ Celebrate Halloween Without Leaving a Trace 🚮

Halloween decorations, candy wrappers, pumpkin guts, glow sticks, and costumes can create a surprising amount of waste.

We love celebrating, but we also love the place we're celebrating in.

So while you're camping with us, remember our Leave No Trace mindset:

Pack it in. Pack it out.

Bring reusable water bottles instead of disposable ones when possible. Keep candy wrappers and small pieces of trash from blowing into the river or surrounding vegetation. Don't leave pumpkin pieces, decorations, confetti, balloons, or other materials behind.

Please don't attach decorations to trees or natural features, and leave pinecones, rocks, plants, feathers, and other natural objects where you find them.

And when the weekend is over, take one last look around your campsite.

If you brought it with you, make sure it leaves with you.

The goal is simple: have a great time without leaving our beautiful corner of the Kern River Valley any worse for having been here.

🎃 A Different Kind of Halloween Weekend

Halloween in Kernville isn't about trying to fit a hundred activities into one weekend.

It's about making memories.

It's waking up by the river.

It's watching your kids carve pumpkins at the picnic table.

It's putting on a costume and walking through town for candy.

It's paddling a lake dressed as a witch.

It's hiking through the mountains on a cool fall morning.

It's gathering around a campfire after dark.

And maybe it's starting a Halloween camping tradition your family comes back for year after year.

🏕️ Come Celebrate Halloween at the Edge

We're excited to see what Halloween at the Edge becomes.

As we continue planning, we're looking forward to adding more family-friendly activities, contests, games, and little surprises for our campers.

So pack your costumes, bring your family and friends, grab your favorite camping gear, and come spend Halloween weekend in the mountains.

The Kern River is waiting.
