The Ultimate 4-Day Fourth of July Camping Getaway on the Kern River 🇺🇸🏕️

Looking for a family-friendly Independence Day adventure that's close enough for a long weekend but feels worlds away from city life?

At Kern River's Edge Campground, families from Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino, San Diego, and throughout Southern California gather each summer to reconnect with nature, enjoy quality time together, and celebrate America's birthday under the stars.

One of the things we love most about the Kern River is how often it becomes a meeting place for multiple generations. Grandparents, parents, kids, cousins, and friends come together from different parts of California, creating memories that last far longer than the holiday weekend itself.

If you're planning a 4th of July camping trip, here's an itinerary packed with river fun, giant sequoias, local adventures, and one of California's most beloved small-town fireworks celebrations.

Day 1: Arrive, Unplug & Settle Into River Life

Afternoon

Arrive at Kern River's Edge Campground and get settled into your campsite. Take a deep breath, leave the traffic behind, and trade screen time for riverside time.

Late Afternoon

Cool off from the summer heat by exploring one of the calmer shoreline areas along the Upper Kern River such a Riverkern Beach, known by locals as The Curve. This year, river levels are super fun and mellow! Families can splash, skip rocks, hunt for tadpoles and enjoy the refreshing mountain water while soaking in the beautiful scenery.

Evening

Fire up the grill, share a meal around the picnic table, and watch the stars emerge above the canyon walls. There's something magical about hearing laughter around the campfire instead of notifications on a phone.

Day 2: Giant Trees, Hidden Wonders & Family Traditions

Morning

Take a scenic drive up the mountain to the famous Trail of 100 Giants, where massive sequoias tower overhead. Kids love feeling tiny beneath these ancient giants, while grandparents often share stories and photos that become treasured family keepsakes. A great "hands on" experiential tour for all as interpretive signs guide you through the Giants.

Afternoon

For adventurous families, explore nearby Nobe Young Falls and experience standing under or climb into the cave behind this gorgeous 75 foot waterfall tucked into the mountainside. Be sure to bring sturdy river shoes or sandals that grip well on wet rock, and, pack a picnic to stay a while here.

Evening

Enjoy a classic Kern River tradition with dinner at McNally's Fairview Restaurant before taking an evening stroll across the river bridge as the mountain air cools.

Day 3: River Adventure & Fourth of July Fireworks

Morning

Experience the Kern River from a whole new perspective with a guided rafting trip. Several local outfitters offer family-friendly float trips as well as exciting whitewater adventures for thrill-seekers. Call our friends over at Momentum River Expeditions, Sierra South or Whitewater Voyages to schedule your rafting tour!

Afternoon

Spend time exploring historic Kernville. Browse local shops, grab an ice cream, and learn about the area's rich history at the Kern River Valley Museum.

Evening

The highlight of the weekend arrives with the annual Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza over Lake Isabella. Bring blankets and chairs, gather with family and friends, and enjoy a spectacular celebration beneath the summer sky.

It's the kind of evening that children remember for years and grandparents never forget.

Day 4: Lake Fun & One Last Adventure

Morning

Head to Lake Isabella for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or simply relaxing along the shoreline before heading home.

Afternoon

Grab lunch in town, pick up a few local souvenirs, and take one final riverside walk before packing up camp. Many families tell us their only regret is not booking an extra day.

Top Tips for a Successful July Camping Trip

Beat the Heat ☀️

Summer temperatures often reach the 90s and occasionally exceed 100°F. Bring shade canopies, extra ice, cooling towels, and plenty of drinking water.

Prioritize Water Safety 🌊

The Kern River is beautiful but powerful. Always wear properly fitted life jackets around moving water and supervise children closely.

Respect Fire Restrictions 🔥

Personal fireworks are prohibited throughout the area. Leave the fireworks to the professionals and help protect our forests and communities from wildfire risk.
