The Art of Camping @ the Kern River’s edge: Why We Prioritize Pristine Nature at Kern River’s Edge

Welcome to Kern River’s Edge (KRE), where the water is clear, the stars are bright, and the mountains are our neighbors. We believe that camping is more than just a place to park—it’s an opportunity to reconnect with nature and yourself. Because we are lucky enough to manage 15 beautifully wild acres right on the edge of the Kern River, we go to great lengths to keep our park pristine.
Here is why we do things a little differently at KRE and how you can help us protect this slice of Kernville paradise.
1. Stewardship: Why We Sweat the Small Stuff (Literally)
At KRE, we are meticulous about cleanliness. You might see us patrolling for what we call "micro-trash". While large items are obvious, tiny pieces like bottle caps, cigarette butts, plastic ties, and those pesky juice box straw covers are actually some of the most dangerous pollutants.
Why it matters: Wildlife, including the rare California Condors native to our region, or our majestic bald eagles, can mistake micro-trash for food, which is often fatal.
How you can help: Keep all trash bagged within your camp at all times. We ask that you do a final sweep of your site before checking out to ensure not even a single plastic tie is left behind.
Research ways to create less trash while packing for your camping trip (e.g. using refillable, washable water bottles and dishes).
If your group is looking for a community service project or to learn more about preserving wild spaces, consider volunteering with Keepers of the Kern or the Kern River Conservancy during your visit.
We know and absolutely love seeing when our camping guests “get it”! How do they show us? We've had camping guests show up with their own gardening rake from home so that they can collect all micro-trash before they leave. Talk about leaving a place better than you found it!

2. Dark Skies & Starlight
One of the greatest luxuries of being in the Kern River Valley is our dark night skies. We observe a respectful 10:00 PM quiet time, which includes dimming lights, turning off generators and music.
We specifically ask guests to dim their lights by 10:00 PM. Why?
The Reward: By reducing light pollution, everyone in the park can enjoy the Milky Way in its full glory.
Etiquette: Please use headlamps or flashlights pointed toward the ground rather than bright area lanterns that spill over into your neighbor’s site.
3. Respecting the Shared Experience
We regard Kern River's Edge as an outdoor sanctuary, not a party place. We work hard to curate a peaceful atmosphere so every guest can hear the river, not their neighbor’s playlist.
Sound Travel: Sound carries easily over the water and through the trees. If your music can be heard from the next site over, it’s too loud—even before quiet hours. We much prefer the sounds of the river or kids playing to the sounds of thumping bass or a generator.
Common Manners: Walking through another guest’s campsite is like walking through their living room. Please stick to the established "trail system" to ensure everyone has the privacy they deserve. Cutting down shrubs or trees is illegal and will result in a fine. Firewood can be purchased anywhere locally or from our Camp Host.
Pet Care: Letting your pet go potty on our beautifully manicured Grove lawn or in someone else’s campsite is not good manners. Please attend your pet at all times, follow California leash law, and take them out on hikes, often.
4. Experience the Best of Kernville
We encourage our guests to spend their days exploring everything our valley has to offer. We aren’t just a place to sit; we are a gateway to adventure. We highly recommend:
Local History: Visit the Kern Valley Museum to learn about the gold miners and ranchers who shaped this land.
Adventure: Book a rafting trip on the legendary Kern River or head to Lake Isabella to paddle, fish, or climb the surrounding granite peaks.
Hiking & Biking: There are miles of trails just minutes from our gates that offer world-class views of the Sequoia National Forest.
